Dispelling the myths and taboos around feminine and intimate care.

We understand that having embarrassing smells, discharge or irritation can be a cause for great concern. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions.

I keep hearing about needing to maintain my vagina’s pH balance. What is pH balance?

pH is a scale of acidity or alkalinity. It’s measured on a range from 0 to 14, with a pH lower than 7 considered to be acidic and a pH higher than 7 considered alkaline.[7a]

What is the ideal pH balance for my vagina?

A slightly acidic vagina is the perfect environment for the types of good bacteria that help keep your vagina clean and healthy – a pH between 3.8 and 4.5 is ideal[7b]. Most harmful bacteria have a hard time surviving in this acidic environment. Keeping those harmful bacteria at bay is not only important for general hygiene and comfort, but also helps avoid infection and diseases.[8b]

Why can’t I just use normal soap to wash my vagina?

Soap is a big no-no for your intimate areas. The ingredients in many bath soaps are very alkaline and upset the pH balance, which can cause vaginal irritation[12b]. You’ll know when it starts to itch or smell unpleasant.

How do I make sure my vagina’s pH balance is always ideal?

A healthy vagina contains both good and bad bacteria. Usually, the good bacteria outshine the bad, helping to maintain an ideal balance. Unfortunately, things like contraceptives, vaginal medications, stress, sexual intercourse and antibiotics can unsettle the vaginal pH balance and cause the bad bacteria to outgrow the healthy bacteria, increasing the risk of infection[3a].

I’ve always been told my vagina is self-cleaning and water is the only thing that should go ‘down there’. So why should I use a specially formulated product?

Several factors can cause a pH imbalance, which can lead to an overgrowth of bacteria or yeasts that cause vaginal infections[3a]. That’s why you want to make sure you use a product, like GynaGuard Essential Intimate Wash, that is specifically made to take care of your vagina and support a healthy, ideal pH balance.
